Police will work to the instructions of the Election Commission

The Police Services will work according to the instructions of the Elections Commission and a manual compiled jointly by the police and Election Commission during the presidential election, Superintendent of Police Mohamed Riluwan has disclosed yesterday during a news briefing regarding the role of police on election day. The news briefing outlined the arrangements made by Police and Maldives National Defence Force for maintaining law and order and security on election day. Riluwan explained a special team appointed by Commissioner of Police Adam Zahir has undertaken some studies acquiring the necessary experience from abroad and at home on ways how the police can best perform their role. The necessary legal training has also been given to the police, he said.

Riluwan said the training included aspects of law on police, and police regulations, rights in the constitution, regulation on criminal justice system, human rights, laws and regulations on elections and presidential elections. In addition to this, practical training is being given to police both in Male’ and atolls. " We have compiled a manual on the role of police in this election. This was prepared jointly with Election Commission, Police will carry out their duty in this election according to the instruction of the Election Commission. But police will be active to prevent and stop any criminal offence. Riluwan elaborated.

Riluwan further explained a Coordinating Command Centre has been established in Police Headquarters to carry out all works related to the election. There are also command centres established at regional level. While police will be deployed in all islands, every atoll will have commissioned officer in charge.

In yesterday’s meeting. Major Ibrahim Afzal of MNDF said police will be be in charge of the normal security and law and order matters while MNDF will provide the necessary support to police in the event police needing their service and national security. He appealed to political parties and presidential candidates to refrain from any action that will undermine national security and peace of the country.
