MDP Alliances presidential candidate Mohamed Nasheed (Anni) has expressed that he will hold free and fair presidential elections just two and half years after assuming the presidency. Mohamed Nasheed (Anni) made the statement speaking at a rally held in Addu atoll organized by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Coalition and opposition parties backing MDP.
Speaking at the first rally organized under the presidential runoff elections campaign launched yesterday night at Male’ under the theme ‘Wathan Edhey Gothan’ ( As the nation desires) presidential candidate Mohamed Nasheed said the message given by the people in the first round of the presidential elections is very clear. He said the slow pace of development is not due lack of adequate policies but due to lack of system of good governance.
Main opposition leader said even though a regime change is possible, government that meets the expectation of the people can only be ushered through an election held under democratic principles. He said he will provide that opportunity in the first two years of his leadership and that he will introduce such democratic principles and values so that future leaders may be appointed according to the aspirations and expectations of the people.
He said his resolve has even grown stronger with the backing of the opposition parties. He said he is fully confident that Dr. Hassan Saeed , who was the first to back Anni, will actively participate in the second round of campaigning.
He called on DRP presidential candidate Maumoon Abdul Gayoom to respect the people’s wish. Anni said 30 years in power is enough. Anni expressed that he had no desire to be a barrier to the political aspirations of some politicians
