SLP denies possible coalition with MDP

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008

Political discussions between Social Liberal Party (SLP) and Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) are an ongoing affair, Deputy Leader of SLP as well as Chief Spokesperson for Ibra 2008 Hassan Latheef has said.

Hassan Latheef rejected the ongoing speculations that talks are underway between the presidential candidates of both parties, Ibra and Anni, on a possible coalition and on who will lead the coalition and who will be the running mate. He said ‘no official discussion on the subject has taken place’.

“But as we are a political party, and we being the best party MDP can relate to, talks on common interests has taken place” Hassan Latheef said.

Hassan further said there are many common objectives both parties share and that it will not be difficult to work with MDP.

“We believe MDP and SLP are working with one common objective and that is to bring reform to the country, both parties believe that top officials of the government have not worked sufficiently to introduce reform” Hassan said.

Hassan also said despite common grounds between both parties, differences do exist. Highlighting the fact that most of the front line members of SLP are former MDP members, Hassan said it is because of these differences SLP came in to being.

Hassan went on assure that SLP’s presidential candidate Ibrahim Ismail, by will of Almighty, will contest the elections.
