Progress measured by amount of money in the pockets – Anni

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) presidential candidate Mohamed Nasheed (Anni) has stated that development expected by the Maldivian people is measured in terms of the amount of “money that goes in to their pockets”. MDP presidential candidate made the statement speaking at the launching of the MDP Coalition’s presidential manifesto held at Artificial Beach last night.
Speaking at the manifesto launching ceremony presidential candidate Anni said the development expected by people is not measured by number of high rise buildings or sweet talks but measured in the amount of money that goes in to the pockets of the people.
Anni said a government expected by the people can be considered to be established if that government is able to meet the expectations of the people. Anni said MDP is firmly committed to bring an end to President Gayoom’s rule and establish a government expected by the people. He said forming of other opposition parties, following the initiative and example demonstrated by MDP, is clear proof of MDP’s firm commitment to democratic reform.
Anni said that while the presidential candidates are busy sharing their policies and strategies with the people planned for the next five years, they do not poses a solid foundation to build on. He expressed that the main reason why the present government failed to fulfill their promises to the people is because of the lack of this foundation.
Anni further expressed that he is confident of winning the forthcoming presidential elections in the first round it self. However he said the next phase, following election victory, will be difficult. He said the next phase is the actual transition from an autocratic government to a democratic government. But Anni said MDP was fully prepared to face the transition and has made adequate plans.
MDP presidential candidate further said Independent presidential candidate, former attorney general Dr. Hassan Saeed is the biggest obstacle to the people’s government MDP wants to establish. Anni said this is because Dr. Hassan’s wants to establish an individualistic government which is no different to the present government. He urged the people to think twice before casting their vote.
MDP Coalition’s running mate, Chairperson of the National Alliance (NA) Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik expressed that the next 14 days was very important days to bring an end to this 30 year old tyrannical rule. He called on the people of Maldives to roll up their sleeves and join MDP Coalition to bring an end to rule Gayoom’s 30 year old rule.
Speaking at the ceremony MDP Chairperson Maria Ahmed Didi said the manifesto of the MDP coalition was very different from the manifestos of the rest of the presidential candidates contesting the elections. She said the coalition’s manifesto is formed after carefully evaluating the needs and aspirations of the people.
Speaking at the manifesto launching ceremony , MDP Interim President Ibrahim Hussain Zaki called on the people not provide chances to Dr. Hassan to establish an individualistic government if the people wanted democratic reforms. Zaki also called on presidential candidate of Social Liberal Party (SLP) Ibrahim Ismail, to return his roots, as he was with MDP before.
MDP Coalition is the 5 th party to officially reveal their presidential manifesto, after DRP, SLP, IDP and Dr. Hassan Saeed.
