JP calls on Auditor General to investigate Gayoom’s use of state resources

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

Jumhoory Party (JP) has called on Auditor General to investigate the use of state resources by Dhivehi Rahyithunge Party (DRP) presidential candidate Maumoon Abdul Gayoom in his campaign to seek a seventh term as the president of the country. JP party made the call during the daily media briefing held at their campaign office.

Speaking at the media briefing Chief Spokesperson of JP and JP parliamentary group member Ahmed Sameer said that the use of state resources in the campaign must be stopped and that if this was allowed to continue forthcoming presidential elections will no longer be a fair election. He urged DRP presidential candidate Gayoom stop using state resources in his campaign if he wanted free and fair elections.

Speaking at the media briefing party’s parliamentary group member MP for Gnaviani atoll Mohamed Ibrahim Didi (Modi) said that use of state resources by Gayoom in his campaign is a matter of serious concern and that matter should be looked in to by Auditor General. Modi said this is a clear indication of Gayoom’s insincerity.

Modi said on June 9, 2004 in presenting the Reform Agenda, President Gayoom has said that to be the president for more than 2 terms is undemocratic and against the modern democratic principles and that Gayoom’s bid to seek another term in office by contesting the forthcoming elections further shows his lack of sincerity. Modi further said Gayoom does not practice what he preaches. Modi also criticized Gayoom for telling outright lies on TVM hard talk program Siyaasath.
