Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

Dhivehi Rahyithunge Party (DRP) will not agree on a coalition with any other parties unless the parties agree on having leader of DRP as the presidential candidate of the DRP coalition, Chief Spokesperson and Registrar of DRP Ibrahim Shafiu has said.

When asked if there is any truth in the public speculation that a agreement has been reached with DRP, People’s Alliance (PA) and the main opposition MDP Shaifiu replied that he does not regard the parties collaborating on a common agenda as a political, however, he did say not such has made with any of the party.

“We are the largest political party in this country and in that sense we don’t have step back to elect another candidate” Shaifu explained.

When asked whether DRP was collaborating with MDP and PA to defeat the influential billionaire politician Qasim Ibrahim who is now heading the Jumhoory Coalition, Shafiu replied that it was not party’s policy to work to defeat a specific candidate. Shaifu revealed that DRP’s efforts will be targeted at electing its leader Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and not on defeating a candidate. Shaifu also revealed that these stories regarding the collaboration with MDP and PA are mainly due to DRP, MDP and PA voting in the parliament with a common agenda to elect the Election Commission.

Media Manager of Maummon 2008 Athif Shukoor during the daily briefing has revealed that presidential manifesto of DRP’s candidate will be officially revealed in the coming days. He revealed the manifesto will clearly define the DRP candidate’s policies and strategies for the next five years. He also said that welcome received from Lh. Naifaru for the DRP leader when he arrived there for campaigning was a tremendous welcome that indicates the huge popularity of DRP leader.
