Deputy Foreign Minister to judge film competition

Deputy Foreign Minister Dunya Maumoon has been invited to judge a documentary film competition to highlight the Human Dimension of Climate Change by the World Bank, foreign ministry has revealed. According to Foreign Ministry the competition is launched by the World Bank’s Social Development department will be held at the end of the year and winners will be chosen through a public and panel vote.

Foreign Ministry revealed that Dhunya Maumoon is chosen as a judge by the World Bank for her dedication and commitment to a number of advocacy issues, as well as her role as an influential activist in many areas including the promotion of women’s rights and youth affairs and enhancing the profile of the Maldives abroad. More recently, Dhunya played an active role in elevating the urgency of climate change and strengthening focus on its adverse human impacts at various high-level international forums.

The World Bank’s Social Development Department has been at the forefront in raising awareness and concern for the world’s most pressing problem and the competition will aim to emphasize the vulnerability of developing countries and the world’s poorest to find equitable solutions to this global problem.

According to Foreign Ministry Dhunya will sit in the panel alongside other distinguished experts, including Zeinab Bandawi, BBC World News Presenter; Atiq Rahman, Executive Director of Bangladesh Center for Advanced Studies; Ramya Raghavan, Non-Profits and Activism Manager on YouTube; and Jorge Daniel Taillant, Executive Director at Center for Human Rights and Environment of Argentina.

Submissions for the competition will close on October 24, 2008, and award winners will receive an all expense paid trip to Washington, DC for the screening of their film in December 2008, foreign ministry informed.
