Adhaalath Party (AP), at a news conference held yesterday at press room Fansavees at Dharubaaruge , condemned the Majlis decision to disqualify Adhaalath Party’s nominee to the Elections Commission established under the new constitution .
Leader of Adhaalath Party, Sheikh Hussain Rasheed Ahmed, briefing the media said Adhaalath Party strongly condemned the Majlis decision to disqualify Sameer even when doubts on his eligibility has been cleared by the Election Commissioner’s Office.
AP’s nominee Ahmed Sameer , joined by front line members of the party said, that he is a victim of plot schemed up by his opponents. Sameer revealed that he became aware of the wrong doing when the Majlis committee brought up the matter. Moreover the inclusion of his name in the Poverty Eliminating Party (PEP) list was done without his consent or knowledge and that it is evident from the documents drawn up in his name to join PEP. He further said his signature has been forged and that this can be easily noticed.
“When the matter surfaced, I went to the Election’s Commissioner’s Office and asked for clarification of the matter, they showed me a copy of my ID card and letter with a similar signature as mine, but it is not mine, anybody will know the difference” Sameer explained.
Majlis ad hoc committee tasked with screening of nominations by political parties rejected the name of Ahmed Sameer of M. Asaree Handhu, Adhaalath Party’s nominee to the interim Election Commission, for the second time last Tuesday. Sameer was previously disqualified by the Majlis last Sunday as he was found to be included in a list submitted by another political party to complete registration formalities.
People’s Majlis on last Sunday provided a second opportunity to Adhaalath Party and People’s Party after nominations proposed by the parties earlier failed to meet the required qualifications. Adhaalath Party when given the second opportunity submitted the name of Ahmed Sameer once again.
However at the committee meeting held to make a decision on Sameer, 2 members voted in favor of accepting the name of Sameer. Raa atoll MPs Shaheed Zaki and Ali Waheed voted in favor, while 3 other members, Kaafu atoll MP Maria Ahmed Didi, President’s member Ahmed Zahir and Meemu atoll MP Ahmed Nazim abstained.
