People’s Majlis members did consider a no confidence against the newly elected Speaker of the Majlis Mohamed Shihab, for accepting a name for the Election Commission by Jumhoory Party (JP) after the lapse of deadline stipulated for submission of names, Legal Reform Minister Mohamed Nasheed has revealed. Minister Nasheed revealed this in an article written in his private internet blog.
According to Nasheed members sharing the sentiment in the corridors of parliament were quick to make the connection between the Speaker’s decision to allow the JP’s nomination and his membership of the party.
Nasheed revealed that although the Shihab’s decision has not been questioned inside the Majlis chamber as yet, members have told him that if the sentiment were to gain momentum, it is highly likely that members may consider a no-confidence motion against the speaker.
When the deadline for submission of names for the Election Commission lapsed at 1400 hours on the 19 of August 2008, only seven political parties’ submitted names and the names were screened by the Secretary General of the Majlis, Nasheed wrote.
Nasheed said that the National Congress of JP was held after the lapse of the deadline and that if he were the Speaker he would not have allowed the late nomination. According to reports JP held its National Conference on the 22 of August and submitted a name for the Judicial Services Commission on the 25 of August.
Nasheed also wrote the Speaker’s decision has angered members of People’s Alliance (PA), a party promoted by Abdulla Yamin former Higher Education Minister as well as brother of President Gayoom. Nasheed noted that Peoples Alliance who could have held their congress and sent a name if there were no deadlines imposed. It could have done just like the JP did.
According to the newly ratified constitution, in order to be successful, every nomination will need two third of the votes of those present and voting. Nasheed says a full house can be expected for important votes and as such 34 votes out 50 needs to be obtained to successful.
