Jumhoory Party National Conference elect Gasim

Jumhoory Party, JP has elected one of the founding members of the reform movement and leading businessman Gasim Ibrahim as its leader and presidential candidate. JP endorsed Gasim’s leadership of the party in its first national conference attended by more than 400 delegates held yesterday when he secured 372 votes. Abdullah Jabir GA member of People’s Majlis, Ahmed Nashid, Dhaalu member of People’s Majlis, Ibrahim Shaheed Zaki, Raa member of the People’s Majlis and Mohamed Muiz Adnan former Justice Minister were elected deputy leaders.

Gasim and his deputies and several parliamentarians in JP were key members of President Gayoom’s party DRP, before joining JP. Gasim and Muiz Adnan held the portfolios of Finance and Justice respectively before they resigned from the cabinet this month. Jabir was also associated with former higher education minister and president Gayoom’s brother Abdulla Yamin’s party PA and Jabir’s joining JP has surprised many. Jabir’s eloquent and lawyer wife Fathmath Diyana Saeed and former president’s member of the People’s Majlis also joined JP with her husband. Former president of MDP Dr. Mohamed Munavvar has also joined JP after resigning from the main opposition party.

10 more members were elected to the JP Council. They are Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan, Dr. Abdullah Afeef, Ahmed Sameer, Dr. Ahmed Shamheed, Ali Shaheen, Abdullah Riyaz, Mohamed Fikry, Ali Shareef, Moosa Rameez, and Abdullah Shareef. Ahmed Saleem Hussain was elected as president of Islamic league. The conference also elected Diyana Saeed as president of women’s league, and Moosa Anwer as president of youth league.

Speaking at the main session of the conference last night at Dharubaaruge, Gasim vowed he will be loyal to the people and deliver the nation to the people who are its rightful owners. He said this is the major responsibility and determination of his party. Gasim said Islam would be the main pillar of the party and democracy will be JP’s basis. JP will uphold the constitution, guarantee justice and rights for all, transform the country into a law abiding society. Gasim went on to say he is committed to serving the people and the nation in a way resources of the country well be utilised in a manner which would benefit the people and he will run and manage the affairs of the country according to fair and just policies.

The millionaire politician who has established a strong political base for a long time stated we must leave aside jealousy and confrontations in this huge task, and there should not be any confrontations during the campaigns leading to democratic reform in the country and our interest must be the interest of the nation. There are no enemies among us, The enemy is is the system which deprived the people of their rights, the system of discrimination, the system which rought hatred and corruption, the system which cultivated the drug menace, the system which deprived the people of shelter, the system of begging for medical and welfare assistance, Gasim said.

JP leader said this great task must transcend these challenges and strengthen our unity and cohesion on a foundation of national interest and that foundation must be a gift we give to the future.

JP deputy leaders Shaheed Zaki, Mohamed Muiz, Abdullah Jabir also spoke and they said JP is determined to provide a prosperous life to the people and it will develop the country on an issue based policy. They also lashed the government labelling it as a failure and said JP was determined to bring an end to President Gayoom’s rule. Presidents of the women’s league Diyana Saeed, youth leader Moosa Anver and religious league Ahmed Saleem also spoke.
