Gayoom campaign kicks off

Leader of Dhivehi Rahyithunge Party (DRP)Maumoon Abdul Gayoom , president of the Maldives and his running mate Vice Leader of DRP Ahmed Thasmeen Ali, Atolls Minister officially launched the party’s presidential campaign for the forthcoming presidential elections at a colorful ceremony held at Alimas Ufa on Friday night.

At the ceremony which included some cultural shows, the DRP presidential campaign logo and campaign song was also launched. The ceremony was participated by party Vice Leader Ahmed Shiyam Mohamed, council members, popular and renowned actors, producers from the film industry, members from the national football team and large number of party members and supporters.

A special cultural dance known as ‘Bilehdhafi negun’ was held. The dance was of special significance as it held special symbolic letters to the 20 atolls of the country illustrating the launching of the presidential campaign to the atolls as well, according to DRP.

Speaking at the ceremony President Gayoom said that country will reach new heights in development in the next ten years. He said the forthcoming elections were a good opportunity for the people to choose what is best for them. He also expressed that during the various stages of the campaign different developmental programs planned for the future will be revealed.

Introducing his running mate Thasmeen to the audience President Gayoom said that Thasmeen was a capable and charismatic partner who knew what is best for the country’s economy.

Thasmeen, in his turn, said that it was an honor to work with such an experienced politician as President Gayoom. He talked about the high literacy rate the country has achieved under President Gayoom’s leadership and noted that it on par with most advanced European countries. Thasmeen said his policies will be policies that are acceptable to the people and will depend on past experiences.

Among the film industry personalities who attended the ceremony are famous play writer and director Fathumath Nahla, renowned actor / director Ali Seazon, actress Sheela Najeeb and actor Mohamed Manik. Manik speaking at the ceremony expressed that it would not be wise to ‘send your children to trainee doctors’.

Actor /Director Ali Seazon said that although he was not a member of DRP, he believed that only President Gayoom was suited to the top job in the country.
