Child support money to be increased

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

Family court has revealed that a decision has been reached to increase the child support money paid for the maintenance of children of divorced or separated families.

Senior Judge of Family Court Yousuf Hussain informed Miadhu Daily that the decision to increase the child support money payable by the fathers of the children of the divorced or separated families was made due to the increasing number of complaints received to the court over the inadequacy of the current amount. Senior Judge further informed that court believed that the current stipulated amount of Rf.450 per child per month do not reflect present economic status.

Judge Yousuf informed that a draft regulation is under scrutiny by the concerned government agencies and that it was not included in the newly ratified constitution as the works is not fully complete. He informed that if fathers fail to provide the child support money the matter should be reported to the Family Court without delay and that it is the responsibility of the fathers to provide for his children until they reach 18 years in age. He further informed that if the father is government employee then child support money will be deducted from his salary and will be handed over to the party looking after his children or child.

Senior Judge of Family Court informed that he cannot disclose the increased monthly child support amount as yet, but said that necessary regulations to make the amount effective are in its final stages. He also informed that the fathers are required to support for their children’s clothing, medical and other necessities in addition to the monthly Rf.450.

According to the mothers of the divorced or separated families only few fathers support their children on a regularly basis and that some fathers do not ever acknowledge their responsibility for their children.
