Breaking News: Majlis elect new Speaker; Majlis adjourn over a Vote Dispute

Acting Speaker Hassan Afeef has decided to postpone the election pending clarification of the disputed matters. He announced that at 1300 pm. He wants to avoid any disputes in the election of the speaker and the Deputy Speaker . He was adjourning the meeting to hold next meeting on Tuesday, 12th August after verifying these matters.

Acting Speaker Hassan Afeef after the Majlis resumed as informed there was a dispute vote Dhaal Member, Ahmed Shiyam’s vote so Majlis might have to cancel the pervious vote. Shiyam was a member of the board of Directors, MTDC, but he told the Majlis he has resigned from the MTDC. Majlis was adjourn for verifying the matter.

People’s Majlis in its meeting today has elected President Member Ahmed Zahir as the Speaker of the Majlis for the transition period of the new constitution . Zahir receive 25 votes while the second candidate Male’ member Mohammed Shihab receives 23 vote just 2 vote less than Ahmed Zahir. 49 members of the 50 members Majlis were present , while the longest serving member of the Majilis, Thaa Member Hassan Afeef carried the meeting during the election of Speaker and the Deputy Speaker . Zahir was Speaker of the Majlis until he resign from the post on 7th August , when he was appointed president Member. This was seen as a move by the government to elect Zahir back to the powerful post to handle the Majlis during the transitional period. During the transitional period Mohammed Shihab strongly supported by the opposition Jumhooree party while some other oppositions and the independent members also supported Shihab. Shihab was strongly tipped to be elected as the Speaker of the Majlis. A Secret vote was taken in the election. And ballot papers were shredded in front of members after counting and announcing of result.
