Islands report food shortage

Island offices have reported shortage of food items due to difficulties in arranging transport to the islands resulting from severe weather conditions prevalent over the country.

Maavaidhoo Island Chief Hussain Mohamed informed that most of the shops in the island have exhausted their stock of staple foods. He said rough seas and heavy rains are preventing usual travel of cargo ships and dhonis from Male’.

Island office of Kumundhoo of the same atoll informs that they are too facing food shortage due to severe weather conditions and stock of staple foods from most shops are nearly empty.

Island Chief of Ha atoll Feevaku Ali Yasir informed that some of the household have reported shortage of staple foods and those vessels carrying foods to the island were forced to turn back due to rough seas.

Atolls ministry speaking on the matter informed that so far only one island have reported shortage of staple food. Ministry also said they were constantly reviewing the matter and is in touch with atoll and island offices. Ministry also informed that in previous years islands have faced similar situations due to severe weather and that the ministry was monitoring the situation.
