Farmers report loss of crops due flooding

Farmers have said that the harvest aimed at this year’s Ramazan will be comparatively less than last year.

According to farmers large number of their fields and crops has been destroyed due to severe flooding caused by heavy rain and bad weather.

Island Chief of Shaviyani atoll Feevaku, Ali Yasir, speaking to Miadhu Daily said that crops have been destroyed due to severe flooding and that this was the second time this happened this year. Yasir said islanders of Feevaku rely on their own produce for sustenance instead of buying from outside. Yasir also said the Feevaku produce many varieties of fruits and vegetables.

Chief Yasir informed that 75% of the island’s produce is sold to tourists resorts and that at present islanders are dismayed over the loss of their crops. Yasir said the farmers’ income will greatly be reduced.

Farmers of Kelaa of Ha atoll have reported devastation of their crops due to heavy flooding. Island Chief of Kelaa Mohamed Waheed, speaking to Miadhu Daily, informed among the crops destroyed were the chili plantations. He said this year the island’s produce for Ramazan will be greatly reduced.
