Sources say that embassies are to be opened in Bangladesh and Pakistan.
According to reliable sources, Adam Hassan, who has been representing Maldives in UK for a considerable amount of time is to be transferred to head the Embassy in Pakistan. Further the Dr. Abdul Samad who has served in the health sector for a long time is to appointed as ambassador to Bangladesh.
It is believed that these 2 embassies would be opened prior to SAARC Summit scheduled to be held in Sri Lanka in August this year.
With the commencement of reform agenda Maldives has opened quite a number of missions and embassies abroad. The establishment of additional embassies began with former Foreign Minister Dr. Ahmed Shaheed. Until recently, Maldives only had just 4 representative offices abroad, in India, Sri Lanka, UN (New York) and UK. The number has now increased with high commissions in China, Japan, UN (Geneva), USA, Singapore and Malaysia.
The first ever Maldives representative office was opened in neighbouring Sri Lanka.
