Police intervene meeting of Jamiyathul Salaf

A meeting organized to give religious to advise organized by a society called Jamiyathul Salaf has been stopped by the police. According to reports the meeting held at Dhoshimayna Maalam of Dharubaaruge was held without the necessary approvals of the Supreme Council on Islamic Affairs.
An official speaking on behalf of Maldives Police Services said the meeting was held without prior approvals from Supreme Council on Islamic Affairs and that such meetings to give religious advice can only be held with the approval of the Supreme Council.
According to Jamiyathul Salaf in order to have the meeting the Dhishimeyana Maalam of Dharubaaruge was rented pursuant to the regulations of the Dharubaaruge. They also said that the maalam (hall) was duly rented with the intent of giving religious advice to members of the society and that many such meetings have been held regularly at Dharubaaruge in the past.
Police informs that meeting was stopped acting on information provided by a member of the general public who had confided in them that the meeting was going on without the necessary approvals. Police also say that such meetings without prior consent of the Supreme Council are against the law.
Jamiyathul Salaf has been holding meetings to give religious talks in various avenues in Male’. According to sources these meetings are recorded on to CDs and are available in a number of shops in Male’.
President of Supreme Council on Islamic Affairs Mohamed Rasheed Ibrahim at a news conference held recently at the Islamic Center has said that all unauthorized publications or literature shall be confiscated and destroyed.
