Article Tools
A letter written by the Commissioner of Police Adam Zahir instructing Commissioner of Elections KD Ahmed Manik to take action against the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has been leaked to media. The Police Commissioner’s letter urged Elections Commissioner to take legal action against MDP by stating that the news release published by MDP on daily newspaper Minivan on 12 February 2007, indicated that MDP was attempting to topple the government by forceful means.
The letter written allegedly by the Police Commissioner Adam Zahir on 18 February of 2007 claimed that MDP was attempting to overthrow the legally established government and that a lot of work was being carried out to topple the Government forceful means.
“MDP in violation of the article 29, 31 and 32 of section of Maldivian penal code headed “Sedition and actions against the Maldivian State” as well as Law no 10/90, is attempting to overthrow the legally established government by establishing relations with foreign party and by conducting various training programs. As such this Service views these actions of MDP may convey the sovereignty of this beloved peaceful country into the hands of a foreign group.” wrote Police Commissioner Adam Zahir to KD Ahmed Manik Commissioner of Elections.
“Such actions planned by any political party is in violation of article 20 of Chapter 4 of the Regulations of Political Parties, and as such this Service views that immediate and urgent steps must be taken” Police Commissioner advised Elections Commissioner.
Also leaked to the media were the letters written by Commissioner of Elections KD Ahmed Manik to then Attorney General Dr. Hassan Saeed seeking legal opinion on the matter as well as a letter written by KD Ahmed Manik expressing his opinion in the capacity of the authority in charge of political parties.
In the letter sent to the Attorney General’s Office, Commissioner wrote that he found no evidence whatsoever that MDP was attempting to over throw the government.
“In my opinion MDP is working with British Conservative party to win the 2008 presidential elections, Conservative Party had indicated that the party would provide all necessary assistance to win the elections” wrote KD Ahmed Manik.
The 2 letters were received by the Attorney General’s Office clearly indicated by the received stamps on the letter. It may then be assumed that the letters were leaked through Attorney General’s Office.
Further it is interesting to note that when former Attorney General Dr. Hassan Saeed, former Justice Minister Mohamed Jameel resigned their cabinet posts in August 2007, it was rumored that security forces checked those offices and even took away some important documents.
