Foundation stones laid in Vilufushi – Foundation stones of houses to be constructed in tsunami-devastated Vilufushi, Thaa Atoll, have been laid.

The foundation stones were laid by Minister of Planning Hamdoon Hameed, Minister of Housing Ibrahim Rafeeq and Head of Disaster Management of British Red Cross Moira Reddick.

A total of 308 houses will be built on the island. Construction of 250 houses is financed by the British Red Cross. The remaining 58 houses will be built from government funding.

Vilufushi will be developed as a safe island. The ground level of the island will reportedly be lifted to protect the island from surrounding waters.

The relocated islanders are presently living in Buruni. 

Hajj tour operators licensed – The Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs has licensed 10 parties to sell Hajj tour packages to pilgrims.

The 10 operators could fly a total of 1000 pilgrims to Mecca this year.

Additionally the council licensed six parties to sell tour packages to pilgrims who whish to travel on lesser-pilgrimage. 

Banners set on fire – Ruling DRP says that seven banners of the party have been burnt in capital Male’.

The vandalism was reportedly targeted against the ongoing campaign of DRP in favor of presidential system of government.

Reports say that hundreds of DRP banners are displayed in different parts of capital Male’.
