Adhaalath condemns statement of Shareef

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

Adhaalath Party has condemned a statement made by Mohamed Shareef, MP for Thaa Atoll, on the floor of the Majlis, general assembly.

According to Adhaalath Shareef on the floor of the Majlis has said that the party in its campaign in Thaa Atoll to promote presidential system of government had told residents that if the country were to embrace parliamentary form of government the people of the country would become disbelievers.

“The Majlis is a tool for spreading misinformation. We did not visit islands to promote any system of government.” Hussein Rasheed Ahmed, President of Adhaalath, told Miadhu.

However Ahmed said that during the campaign that ended on August 17, his party distributed leaflets.

“We cannot file cases against them whatever statement they make on the floor. We only issued a press statement.” Ahmed added.

MPs in Maldives, a Sunni Moslem country, can express their feelings on the floor of the Majlis as long as they do not insult Islam.
