Tourist arrivals increased by over 50 % in 2006

A total of 601,923 tourists visited Maldives last year, says Tourism Ministry. When compared to the year 2005, this is an increase of 52.3%. The maximum number of tourists came from Italy, from where 118,029 arrived. This was followed by UK, Germany, France & Japan.
Last December 58,621 tourists visited the Maldives, out of which 21.0% were from Italy, followed by UK, Germany, France, Japan and Russia.
Out of 18,407 Beds registered in tourist resorts and hotels, on average 16,155 beds were operational by December. Thus 81.85 % of the beds in the country were operational by then, indicating that the tourist industry has recovered more or less fully after the tsunami. Last year, a tourist spent an average of 8 days in Maldives.
