Pranab Mukherjee congratulates the President

Indian External Affairs Minister Mr. Pranab Mukherjee has congratulated President Gayoom for the initiatives he has taken in the reform process in the Maldives. He revealed this in an interview he gave to Television Maldives at the conclusion of his visit to the Maldives to invite President Gayoom to the 14th SAARC Summit.
“We congratulated the President for taking initiatives in the reform process: multi party democracy, amending of the constitution, establishment of various institutions to strengthen this democratic and reform process. We also extended our help and cooperation if it is required in any of these fields.”
During his meeting with the President, Mr. Mukherjee praised the importance of his wisdom and experience as one of the founders of SAARC.
“I requested particularly the President, as being a founder member of SAARC and attending all the SAARC summits, he should take a special role and ensure that the SAFTA is operationalized and our objective of providing benefit to all SAARC member countries is achieved,” Mr. Mukherjee told TVM.
Mr. Pranab Mukherjee also met with Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Ahmed Shaheed yesterday and invited him to attend the Council of Ministers’ Meeting to be held in India prior to the SAARC Summit to be held in India this year. During the visit, Mr. Pranab Mukherjee noted the good relations that exist between India and the Maldives,
“As you are aware Maldives is one of our dearest and oldest friends. Our relationship is totally tension free. We have the best of relations amongst ourselves. And both of us agreed that we should try to make SAARC a thrust so that it can achieve its mandate,” Mr. Mukherjee told TVM after the meeting.
Indian Minister of External Affairs, Mr. Pranab Mukherjee left Maldives yesterday after his official visit.
