No textbook shortages in 2007

Wednesday, December 20th, 2006

There would be no shortages of textbook for 2007, said the Director at Ministry of Education’s Physical Facilitation Department Mohamed Yousuf.
He made the statement during an interview with Miadhu Daily. He further said that all the required books have now been received but there was a small delay due to a supplying problem. He also noted that there was a problem sending two books to print.
When asked about prices he said that even in 2004 books were sold with a discount of between 20 to 25 percent. He said that the price only included printing, supply, and storage costs and that on average a discount of 26 percent would be put on all books.
Commenting on the story of a large number of books being destroyed, he said that those were books published in quantities large enough for two or more years. These books have to be destroyed as the curriculum and syllabus undergoes changes. The destroyed books also include about 20,000 books that were damaged by the tsunami while stored at the ministry’s warehouse behind Male’ English School.
He said that text books are printed with an increase of about 2 to 3 percent over the number of students.
